Playing Roulette

When you play roulette, your goal is to select the winning number that appears on the roulette wheel. You may also bet on different combinations of numbers, pick the colours, or choose whether the winning number would either be odd or even.

There are two types of roulette wheels in use. There is the European wheel and the American wheel. The European wheel contains 37 slots which are numbered from 0 to 36. The house edge when playing roulette using a European wheel is about 2.63. Meanwhile, the American wheel has a total of 38 numbers due to the addition of a double zero or 00. This extra number increases the percentage of the house edge to approximately 5.26.

Roulette originated in France with the modern layout that most people are familiar with dating back to 1842. The roulette layout has two areas for betting. The inside betting area is the one that features the individual numbers of the layout. On the other hand, the outside betting area contains boxes for the various parts such as the columns, odd or even sections, red or black sections, and the various numbers.

Before sitting down to play the game, you need to buy special chips used for making bets in roulette. In order to avoid any possible disputes, each player receives chips of a specific colour to differentiate him from the other people taking part in the game. The chips given can be used only at the particular roulette table that provided them and these chips must be exchanged for cash once a gambler is done playing. However, you must first get regular casino chips at the table since the roulette chips themselves would not be accepted for cash-ins.
